How does D3O armour actually work?

D3O is what materials scientists call a rate-sensitive polymer. In normal use its molecules flow freely past each other, so the armour feels soft, light and flexible. Hit it hard and those molecules lock together for the few milliseconds that matter, firming the pad so it absorbs the impact and spreads the force across a wider area. Once the impact is over, it relaxes back to its flexible state.

The practical difference is comfort you actually keep wearing. Traditional hard armour protects by being rigid all the time, and rigid armour is the kind riders quietly remove; we see plenty of jackets come through with the armour pockets empty. D3O sits flat against your body, moves with you at the bars, and only goes to work when it needs to. The best armour is the armour still in your jacket on the day you need it.

You'll spot D3O easily across RST's 2026 gear: it's the orange pads inside the garments and the small orange D3O tag stitched on the outside.

Is D3O armour CE certified?

Yes. D3O armour is certified to CE Level 1 and Level 2 under EN 1621, the European impact-protection standard for motorcycle armour. In the standard's lab test, Level 1 limb armour must transmit no more than an average of 35 kN of force through the pad; Level 2 must keep that under 20 kN. Less force through the armour means less force into your joints, and Level 2 is the highest rating currently available.

The garment itself carries a separate rating under EN 17092, graded from A up to AAA. The letters rate the whole garment (seam strength, abrasion resistance, coverage), while the armour levels rate the pads inside it. A jacket rated AAA with Level 2 armour is certified at the top of both scales.

In the new RST range the two work together. The Tractech Evo D3O leather jacket and pants are rated CE AAA and run D3O Level 2 armour. The S1 D3O leather jacket is AAA rated, and the S1 D3O textile jackets are AA, which is a strong rating at their price.

Why is the 2026 RST x D3O range a big deal?

Two reasons. First, this is range-wide: every garment in RST's 2026 line-up carries D3O armour, from the race leathers down to the everyday textile jackets and short-cuff gloves. Riders have known D3O for years from premium gear and from D3O's motorsport partnerships; RST has now built it into an entire range at mid-market prices, and RST's own D3O page covers the partnership in detail.

Second, and this is the part that surprised us, the armour upgrade has come with almost no price movement. More on that below, because it deserves its own section.

How much does D3O gear cost in NZ?

Less than you'd expect. D3O has historically been the armour of premium gear, and race-grade leathers with Level 2 protection have usually meant a serious spend before you get to boots and gloves. The 2026 RST range puts that level of protection at mid-market prices: the S1 D3O textile jacket is $319, the Freestyle 3 D3O glove is $135, and the flagship Tractech Evo D3O leather jacket is $699 with AAA certification and Level 2 armour built in.

The sharper part is what hasn't changed. RST added D3O across the entire range and held pricing almost level with the outgoing gear, so the 2026 update is a straight step up in protection for roughly the same money. A full Tractech Evo outfit (jacket, pants, boots and gloves, all with D3O) lands under $2,000, where comparable AAA-rated leathers from premium European brands often start north of $1,000 for the jacket alone.

What RST D3O gear is in stock in NZ?

Track days and fast road: the Tractech Evo D3O leathers are the pick: AAA-rated jacket and pants with Level 2 armour, matched with the Pro Series GP glove and Tractech Evo boots. That's a full top-tier CE outfit for under $2,000 all in.

Everyday riding and commuting: the S1 line covers both camps: leather at $579 (AAA) or textile at $319 (AA), with the Freestyle 3 short glove for warmer months. Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between CE Level 1 and CE Level 2 armour?

Both pass the same EN 1621 impact test; the difference is how much force gets through. Level 1 limb armour transmits no more than an average of 35 kN, Level 2 no more than 20 kN. Level 2 is the higher standard, and it's fitted to key pieces in the RST range, including the Tractech Evo D3O leathers.

What do AAA and AA ratings mean on motorcycle clothing?

They're garment ratings under EN 17092, covering abrasion resistance, seam strength and impact coverage. AAA is the highest class, typically race and sport gear; AA is the standard most quality road textiles aim for. The armour inside carries its own separate Level 1 or Level 2 rating.

Do I need to replace D3O armour after a crash?

After a significant impact, yes: replace the armour and have the garment checked over, since leather, stitching and armour can all take damage that isn't obvious. Bring it into the store and we'll give you an honest assessment.

Can I add D3O armour to gear I already own?

Often, yes. RST sells its D3O protectors separately, and most armoured garments with standard pockets will accept them. Stock of individual protectors varies, so call the store on 09 486 2472 and we'll check what's on the shelf.
